Since later 1990s, Geographic Information System(GIS) has widely developed and applied in China, it has not only changed our visual angle, but also become the powerful support of holding the energy and strength of the Geography Subject, GIS education has been more and more important. Many relative subjects in university such as geography, topography and computer has established GIS , they all cultivated a great deal intelligent persons for modern society. GIS education in basic education has been put up to a high position for the sake of improving the people' information diathesis. In the year of 2003, the new Geography-Curriculum Standard issued by the Ministry of Education historically expanded GIS education from advanced education to senior school, and GIS software platform which is secondary developed was advised to use in GIS class. Nowadays, the research of GIS software platform stands in the starting phase. Based on this, this thesis researches the development and application of GIS software platform, and hopes it can supply some references for the favoring implement of GIS education and the reform of basic education mode of Geography.The auther took part in the training of Geographic Information Technologies for geographic teachers in Shanghai and practiced GIS course in Shanghai Gezhi High School. Based on these works, the author researches GIS education and software application status both at home and foreign countries, and then attempts to develop a simple and practical GIS "self-study software platform" for Basic Education of Geography and applies its functions to geography teaching by designing some samples.The thesis is composed of six chapters. Chapter one is introduction, which introduces the background and important significance, relative research and application status both at home and abroad, brings forward problems exists in our GIS education and the main contents of the thesis. Chapter two analyzes the important roles of GIS education from three aspects: education functions of GIS, requirement of the new curriculum standard and its unique role in integrating information technology into curriculum, points out the indispensable role of GIS software platform in Geography education. Chapter three is theoretical foundation, that is the Constructivism theory and software engineering development theory and method.Chapter four designs the profile and function of the GIS "self-study software platform" in detail, and realizes these functions under the technical system of the popular component GIS MapX5.0 and the object oriented programming tool Visual Basic6.0.Chapter five is teaching application of the platform, which includes the characteristics and principles of the GIS teaching application, some demonstrations which applies functions to geography course to analyze and solve geography questions. Chapter six is conclusion and prospect, which summarizes the research content and works that has been done and puts forward the further research in the future.
