Geography information system (GIS) is a computer system witch collects, stores, manages, analyzes, describes and applies the data about the surface of the earth, space and Geography. Now, GIS is widely used in almost all of the areas relating Geography, including environment, natural resource, people's daily life, management of government and military affairs.WebGIS is the distributed Geography information system based on Internet. Comparing with traditional GIS, WebGIS, which based on B/S structure, has better scalability, broader application extend, becomes the trend of GIS. At the same time, the analysis, study and application of spatial data of WebGIS have become the key component within the WebGIS system structure technology.The first part of the thesis introduces the concept and development of GIS and WebGIS. In this part, the difference between the structure of WebGIS and classic GIS is described and the idea of Distribute Spatial Data Structure is brought out.The second part of the thesis analyses the structure of WebGIS spatial database, then the storage technology of two types of modern spatial database is studied and compared, resulting in choosing ArcSDE as the spatial database design and modeling method.The third part of the thesis is mainly about the modeling and analysis of the structure of the spatial database based on ArcSDE.The last part of the thesis is about the design and implementation of a GIS system, Shanghai Traffic Information Control System. The thesis firstly briefly outlines the design and structure of the system, then describes the design and modeling of the spatial database in detail. Lastly, some key and difficulty point about how ArcSDE control the database is discussed.These four parts strongly proved the point of the thesis. What' s more, the practical project, as an example, shown how to build the database of a huge GIS by using ArcSDE. It makes the thesis worthy in practical use.
