An Information System For Plant Diversity In Wuhan City

Wuhan City is situated in the middle of Hubei Province, the east of Jianghan Plain, and the intersection of the Yangtze River and Hanshui River, whose geographical location is 113?41' E-115?05' E in longitude and 29?58' N-31?22' N in latitude. Wuhan occupies a land of 8467. Ilkm2, most of which is plain low than 50m in altitude and supplemented by hills in the northeast. Wuhan area is rich in water resources with a great number of lakes and rivers. Wuhan' s climate belongs to subtropical zone monsoon climate with abundant rainfall and clear four seasons.Because of its abundance plants species, Hubei province has drown the attention of botanists home and abroad, but most of the researches are about the west part and rather fewer investigation connected with the east and middle have been conducted. These years, as virescence cause and flower business develop rapidly, the flower and garden plants introduced from other area are distributing abroad in Wuhan. At one time, with the extent of urban area and the infection of human activities, the native species have changed a lot. Hence, new information are in great need to meet the demand of the work in agriculture, industrial, environmental protection, virescence, medicine, education and spreading scientific knowledge.This projection is supported by Wuhan Science and Technology Bureau, of which most the first stage work have been finished. An information system of seed plant in wuhan has been constructed, using Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 and Microsoft Access 2000, based on the data collected from many kinds of resources. This system is consist of 3 database: the species basic information database, the medicine plantsdatabase, the flower and garden plants database. The function to increase, delete, seek, statistic and output data in great speed has been gained in this system.The species basic information database offer the basic information of the native seed plants and common or important cultivated plants in Wuhan, in which The gymnosperm plants are arranged in the order according to Zheng Wanjun System and the angiosperm plants according to the Hutchinson System. In Family, the genera and species are set as the letter order of their Latin names. The table of this database has 1645 records, including seed plants 1487 species, 1 sub species, 126 variation, 1 type, and 30 cultivated variation in 167 Family and 729 genera. In the all species, 904 are wild, 615 cultivated and 126 wild or cultivated. This table has 17 fields, through which the taxonomy information, character, use, habitant and distribution of every species are stated.The table of the medicine plants database has 950 records, with such fields as Chinese traditional medicine name, local name, function and use, using part. The table of the flower and garden plants database has 498 records, in which names of the fields are character, growth habit, breeding methods, view properties and garden function, etc.
