Virtual Reality Geographic Information System(VRGIS)is a technology,which can connect virtual reality with geographic information system.VRGIS is a virtual reality technology,which can takes geoscientific system as object,as well as is a rising research branch of GIS recently.Incorporation of virtual reality and geographic information system is in favor of embodying predominance of space expression.improving a capability which Call combine space expression.analyses and search.on the other hand enlarging application area of virtual reality.The traditional VR-GIS exist in the following three shortages:hard to realize the data distributed storage, sharing and interoperability; System structure is closed, and causes other related systems'integration difficulties; Lack of openness, function couldn't expand. The purpose of this research is developing a open VR-GIS prototype system with a new generation of 3D graphics standard X3D for core technology, by using XML data organization and exchange technology,Web Services,network data transmission technology,Xj3D and other related supporting technology. The system is based on next-generation three-dimensional networks design standard X3D, using HTTP tunneling to achieve secure and efficient data transmission.VR-GIS is divided into four levels:distributed heterogeneous data sources, generalized spatial data engine, VR-GIS server and client X3D. Research shows that the VR-GIS based on X3D is better than system based on traditional VRML, OpenGL technology:make full use of the existing data resource, easy to realize distributed heterogeneous spatial data sharing and with interoperable GIS system. The VR-GIS prototype system based on the X3D technology standard design has a good application prospect.Based on years of laboratory research, do exploratory research on key technology of virtual reality geographic information system design. Main goal is analysising the integrated use of the basin VRGIS platform in certain river as the prototype, combining with its characteristics.As the prototype in first class tributary of Xiangjiang river -LaoDaohe combining with its characteristics, comprehensive using VRGIS platform, establish virtual scene basin.
