A village is one of the most dominant settlement forms in China, with its spatial environment closely related to the quality of villagers’ lives,as well as containing valuable tangible cultural heritage and expressing intangible heritage. However, there is a serious problem of modularity in the design vocabulary of the village spatial environment in China, which in turn raises the problems of weakening local identity and incompatibility between space and spatial behavior. In the context of rural revitalization,it is necessary and urgent to solve the related problems, both in terms of improving the quality of villagers‘ daily life and in terms of passing on the cultural heritage. The External Space Plan Elements(ESPE)of the traditional village refers to the various space types and the structures within the boundaries of the village buildings. In order to solve the problem of design vocabulary modularity of the village spatial environment,we propose a strategy based on the ESPE of traditional villages, providing a reference for contemporary village design by summarizing the ESPE patterns of traditional villages, and thereby solve the modularity of the spatial design vocabulary of villages and the secondary problems it brings. In contrast to the existing research questions, the research frame work includes four aspects,"ESPE classification,ESPE shape characteristics, the relationship between ESPE,the relationship between ESPE and spatial behavior".(1)Through interviews, field research, and literature search,22 ESPE were summarized in traditional villages in Hui area.(2)We drawn the centimeter-level resolution village maps by using the low-altitude information collection method, based on which we mapped the elements by field surveying, and then introduced cross-disciplinary research methods such as graphical algorithms to paradigmatically interpret the shape features of the elements.(3)Based on the spatial distribution of elements we summarized 38 typical patterns of association between 22 elements, further analyzed the structural relationship between elements, based on which the topological connectivity between elements in traditional village space was proposed.(4)Through field observation,GPS,and other data collection methods,we analyzed different types of data such as "instantaneous data" and "period data" for the study of spatial behavior at the village scale, and summarized the relationship between ESPE and spatial behavior. We summarized the ESPE pattern based on the results of the above four aspects of research, and practiced the application of the ESPE patterns with Mao Tian new village as an example, and demonstrated the value and advantages of the research in solving the problem of design vocabulary modularity of the village spatial environment and the secondary problems it brings. The ESPE categories of traditional villages and their shapes are the result of long-term adaptive development of people and nature, and its local attributes fit the spatial behavior of villagers, the daily production and living needs of local villagers, and the local natural, climatic and topographical conditions.By taking the ESPE patterns as a reference in the process of village design practice, and by adapting the ESPE patterns to the context of the times,it will be beneficial to realize the design of village exterior space that both meets the needs of contemporary life and promotes the living transmission of local identity.
