Dali Bai Traditional Dwellings Xizhou Exterior Decoration

The thesis takes the traditional vernacular dwelling house of Bai Nationality inXizhou as my research object in respect that the rich and resourceful exterior-walldecoration bears its ethnicity, conventionality and representative. Based on its naturaland human environment as well as its social history, the paper tries to induce thedecorative patterns. In addition to that, some representative patterns and decorativeelements carrying cultural inheritance are sought out after making an analysis of thedevelopment, types and patterns of the decoration. This research also probes theinheritance and evolution of the decoration in Xizhou by comparison with Shacun.The paper can be divided into three parts. The first part, as preface, includes chapterone to two and introduces the background and significance of the research along withthe natural environment, social history, a comprehensive view of Xizhou traditionalcraft such as wood carving, stone carving, brick carving, decal etc. The second partmade up of chapter three is conclusion and key points. There are two chapters: chapterthree dissertates the building and its unique decorative elements in detail. This chapteralso makes a comparison between Xizhou and Shacun to probe the evolution of thedecorative elements. Chapter five mainly thinks about a case study provided byXizhou residence decoration and an inspiration to the space of decoration of otherethnic groups and the public villages and towns’buildings for effectively inheritingtraditional culture. Part three is four chapter，a textual center contents discussing thereasons of the formation of the exterior-wall decoration in point of the social base, theeconomic base and the sources of the decoration creation.
