The thesis studies the revival of "seal carvings with bird and insect script" since the Republic of China. The thesis has three parts. In the first chapter,it initially sorts out and summarizes the literature of two concepts,i.e."bird and insect script"(hereinafter referred as "the script")and "seal carvings with bird and insect script"(hereinafter referred as "the carvings"),and then redefines the above-mentioned concepts. It further explores the origin of "the script" in two disciplines--etymology and philology, with attention paid to the relation between "the script" and early religion.Chapter one also distinguishes different stages of "the script" and "the carvings".Chapter two and chapter three constitute the highlighted parts of the thesis.Chapter two studies artists, works as well as artistic theories in the time, with academic researches of "the script"in the time deeply and comprehensively discussed.Chapter three indicates three causes attributed to revival of "the carvings",i.e.trigger(archeological findings and academic researches followed),internal cause(its self-development)and external cause(aesthetic diversification and refined market trends). Finally, the thesis pinpoints inadequacies beneath the prosperity of "the carvings" in the time, and is most probably to provide some useful advice to its developments.
