Surrounding the historical cities of Jiangnan, there are generally beautiful scenery and long history landscape gardens on the outskirts of the ancient city, which are often located between natural mountains and rivers. The natural landscapes of Xishan Hill and Huishan Hill on the west side of the ancient city of Wuxi,as well as the surrounding temples, gardens and ancestral halls and other artificial camps have been constructed into the western suburbs landscape garden of the city. The city of Wuxi was formed between the Qin and Han dynasties, and the location and form of its ancient county town was deeply influenced by the natural landscape. From the Southern Dynasties to modern times, with the development of the city, the urban population further transformed the landscape of the western suburbs, forming a complex western suburbs landscape garden, also becoming an important scenic spot and historical area in Wuxi. This article studies the formation and growth of the Western Suburbs Landscape Garden diachronicly, and analyzes its relationship with the city in different historical periods,as well as its functional positioning and spatial connotation.Through the detailed interpretation of historical documents combined with the investigation of the existing space, innovation is achieved in the following aspects:1)In terms of spatial dimensions, for the first time, the natural landscapes such as Xishan and Huishan in the western suburbs of the ancient city of Wuxi and the surrounding temples, gardens, and ancestral hall communities are considered as an organic whole for research, and the specific "Western Suburb Landscape Garden" is proposed concept. For a complex area that integrates natural landscapes and various functional historical spaces, construct a research system with integrity thinking.2)In the time dimension,it is the first time to study the whole process of Western Suburb Landscape Garden's growth in historical society. This kind of continuity perspective on the complexity of the western suburbs landscape gardens stems from historical accumulation and transition, spanning from the Southern Dynasties to modern times, helps to understand the evolution logic behind the complexity more clearly, and is instructive for studying the suburban landscape gardens of other cities.3)To explore the relationship between the western suburbs landscape garden and the city of Wuxi as the research goal, not only to the level of isolated research on spatial entities.Through the analysis of the functions of the Western Suburb Landscape Garden relative to the city,it aims to explore the symbiosis between the Jiangnan city and the suburban landscape,as well as the inevitability and contingency factors, and further explore the historical concepts embodied in the relationship between the mountain and the city.4)Interpret the concept of landscape reflected in historical sites by studying the construction activities of urban historical crowds. The scholar-official class was the dominant group in the construction of the western suburbs landscape gardens.Especially during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with the growth of local gentlemen and their families in the south of the Yangtze River, the gardens and ancestral halls in the western suburbs of Wuxi also appeared densely to form communities, forming many scenic spots. The attitude of the scholar-officials towards natural mountains and rivers and the way they use natural mountains and rivers are the embodiment of China's traditional philosophy of "the harmony between man and nature" in the landscape space. The main body of the thesis first summarizes the relationship between the location of Wuxi city and the landscape environment,as well as the natural characteristics of Xishan Hill and Huishan Hill in the western suburbs, and the pattern and remains of the western suburbs landscape garden. Then,in chronological order, analyze the emergence of Buddhist temples in the western suburbs of the Southern Dynasties, the construction of Huishan Temple's spring scenery in the Tang Dynasty, the formation of two springs in the Song and Yuan Dynasties, the tomb of Huishan Temple, the gathering of gardens and villas in the western suburbs of the Ming Dynasty and the construction of public scenic spots, and the Qing Dynasty The inheritance and influence of Xijiao Yuanshu and spring tea culture, the formation of ancestral halls, and the formation of Huishan Town in modern times reveal that the Xijiao Landscape Garden has formed from natural landscapes, from single to multiple, until it became a townized landscape garden. In this process, the Buddhist culture in Jingyuan was gradually tolerated and dispelled by the local Confucian culture, and the relationship between the mountain and the city was continuously strengthened, reflecting the continuation and development of the local society.
