Research On Wuxi Garden Landscape Design At The Beginning Of China’s Reform And Opening

Since 1979, the market changed from planned economy to market economy. During this period, the emergence of a number of landscape with era characteristics reflected the politics, economy and life style, showing a unique design features.These landscape become an important part of Wuxi landscape history. With the fast development of urbanization, part of the landscape has been altered, damaged or even dismantled, but the research in Wuxi Landscape Design of this period is little and the public landscape memories continues to blur. Therefore this research hopes to fill the gaps of landscape research at the beginning of China’s reform and opening through reform and expansion of Wuxi new landscape and its design features.This paper is based on literature and investigation of Wuxi landscape at early 1980 s divided into two stages: exploration and progress. It will introduce the development of landscape and background in different period respectively.From the overall layout,plant landscaping, functional layout and landscape architecture, it will analysis the design characteristics of the two stages and summarize its reason.There are five chapters in this paper. The first chapter is an introduction,mainly on the present research, analyzing the current strengths and weaknesses of existing research to identify research objectives and thesis framework. The second chapter introduces the background of Wuxi landscape, summarizing its development before 1980 s and analysis the division and distribution of Wuxi landscape after the reform and opening. Chapter III and Chapter IV are parallel sections, analyzing the background, development, design features of Wuxi landscape from the two different periods respectively. The fifth chapter summarizes the overall Wuxi landscape evolution since reform and opening, and analyzes the reasons of the evolution.
