Abstract/Summary:
Employees experience a myriad of stressful events in the work environment. Such events include problems with supervisor communication that leads to job stress and poor fit in the work environment - one's abilities matches his or her expectations. Many articles in the literature discuss supervisor communication, job stress, and fit in the work environment but not all in one study. Person environment fit theory provided the framework for this study with its idea that interaction in the work environment can affect employees' stress and fit in the work environment. The real life experiences of this study's participants were shared to understand how job stress and fit in the work environment are affected in employees that have experienced supervisor communication concerns. There were six research questions that addressed supervisor communication, job stress, and fit in the work environment. Phenomenology was the methodology used and 30 participants were interviewed that were full time employees on the job at least a year. They were recruited via a local organizational development network, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Data analysis of the 30 participants' transcribed interviews included coding answers to find major themes in the data. Findings indicated that most of the participants had concerns about supervisor communication that affected his or her stress levels but did not affect his or her fit in the work environment, and communication that is open and transparent would help improve supervisor communication with employees. Social change implications based on these findings include supervisors' need to be aware of how communication can affect employees' stress and fit in the work environment and communication with employees should be honest.
