The relationship between integrative task design for information systems professionals and perceived information systems effectiveness

Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation examines the problem of task design for information systems (IS) professionals and investigates the relationship between integrative task design and perceived information systems effectiveness. A conceptual model was developed that integrated important job design factors from expectancy theory, goal setting theory, equity theory, and job characteristics theory. The model proposed that these important job design factors were positively related to perceived information systems effectiveness.;One key issue which should be noted is that this study was concerned with perceived effectiveness of the total IS function, not just individual employees or systems. This is a departure from most prior studies dealing with task design. The level of analysis is usually the individual employee and the focus is on the relationship between task design and individual work motivation and performance.;A field study was conducted where data was gathered via questionnaires from thirty organizations. Job design factors identified as important by participating organizations included feedback from the job, feedback on goals, goal specificity, employee voice, skill variety, and participation in goal setting. Results of the study also indicate that employee voice, feedback on goals, autonomy, task identity, goal specificity, and participation in goal setting are positively related to perceived information systems effectiveness as measured by hourly users of information systems services.;Limitations of the research and practical implications for both IS practitioners and academics are discussed. Several avenues for future research are presented as well.
