The International Baccalaureate program is a broad and well organized curriculum designed to challenge students during their last two years of high school. It places a premium on excellence in education. It is a program that is multi-cultural, and it is graded by international standards and international examiners.;The purpose of this dissertation is to explain the historical and philosophical background of the International Baccalaureate program, to describe the mechanics of the program, and to discuss its function in North America, especially in its use in urban magnet schools. This study will also analyze the direction the International Baccalaureate is taking by drawing on the latest information pertaining to curriculum, examination, and enrollment trends.
