Abstract/Summary:
Utilizing a variety of primary and secondary source material, the author explored the establishment and growth of the Children's Department at the St. Louis Public Library, 1909–1933. The St. Louis Public Library is examined as an exemplar of how children's librarianship matured as a profession. Issues of race and gender for both the librarians and their patrons were used as categories of analysis.
