This dissertation is an interpretive and critical study of Latina/o identity as performed and articulated in El show de Cristina, a television talk show broadcast on the Spanish-language network, Univision. This study examined how talk constitutes and constructs the Latina/o individual. Influenced by feminist, cultural and critical media studies, this study found negotiations of Latina/o identity through conversational interruptions (overlaps), aspects of nonverbal communication and social role performance. This study also examined articulations of Latina/o identity that highlighted religion, immigrants, gender and music. Religion and music articulations served to construct a shared Latina/o identity, class and race influenced immigrant articulations and gender articulations were both contested and reinforced. |
