Abstract/Summary:
This sequential explanatory mixed methods study tested the learning effectiveness of a codex book against a convergent media resource based on the same content. It also investigated whether users of the two formats reported any differences in their liking of the two formats, or in their tendency to be persuaded to the degree that they altered their behavior. While the study did not show a significant difference in learning effectiveness between users of the two formats, it did suggest that while members of the convergent media group did not necessarily learn better, they likely did learn more. In addition, users of the convergent media resource clearly liked their resource more than did their codex counterparts, and were more persuaded to change their behavior. Finally, by drawing on insights from Multimedia Learning Theory and Entertainment Education, the study suggested ways to design more engaging enhanced eBooks that also improve learning effectiveness.
