Abstract/Summary:
Clients seek therapy to alleviate distress associated with an induced abortion. The research question for this study was: What are the characteristics leading women to a process of resiliency following an induced abortion? This study utilized a generic-qualitative-inquiry method, purposive sampling, and thematic analysis of the data. Eight participants provided narrative answers to a semi-structured interview. Thematic analysis of the narratives identified seven characteristics commonly associated with resilience processes and the resolution of postabortion distress encountered by the participants. These data provide a basis for women with similar circumstances to focus on strengths and reduce the risks of negative outcomes following an induced abortion. The major themes that emerged from the data were the meaning-making process, support networks, spirituality and religion, secure attachment theory, forgiveness, ego control, and ego-defense mechanisms. It is hoped that therapists are able to utilize these characteristics in providing relief to women encountering distress following an abortion.
