Abstract/Summary:
Globalization is a phenomenon with many dimensions and dynamics that has been subject to an abundance of research by many scholars. One area that has not been examined is the interrelationship between globalization and global information and communications technology (G-ICT). Public officials who integrated their countries into the globalization process watched their countries prosper, especially in the Third World, while those who neglected the globalization process experienced economic downturns. This qualitative research study explored the potential relationship between two revolutionary trends of the new millennium---globalization and G-ICT. The qualitative methodology selected was grounded theory with content analysis of existing documents. The issues explored included the expansion of globalization and G-ICT, such as its availability, accessibility, and usability. Furthermore, research included the way globalization and G-ICT is applied by organized terrorists to commit terroristic acts, their implications for individuals, nations, and organizations, and the controversies and divergences that surround globalization, a contentious issue that divides politicians, scholars, organizations, and the international community. Results suggest that globalization and G-ICT are interrelated; the explorative qualitative data examined throughout the study indicate that despite the numerous controversies and divergences surrounding globalization, it is both essential and inevitable, especially in regards to information technology. Subsequently, further studies on globalization and/or global information and communications technology using an empirical approach to measure the extent of such relationships and their implications are warranted.
