Transborder journalism and broadcast journalists' professional and cultural identities in the Saar-Lor-Lux region of Europe

Abstract/Summary:
The aim of this dissertation is to illuminate how journalists make sense of their role within a changing society. More specifically, I investigate how broadcast journalists in Lorraine (France), the Saarland (Germany) and Luxembourg conceive of and carry out their work of covering neighbors within the transnational European region Saar-Lor-Lux. I examine several aspects of transborder journalism, including reporting from the other side of the border, and collaboration with journalists from foreign radio and TV stations.;Drawing on empirical data gathered from in-depth interviews as well as quantitative and qualitative analysis of program content, I explore how transborder journalists understand their work within newsrooms as a whole, and the ways in which this work is shifting over time. New generations of transborder journalists still encounter numerous obstacles, yet they remain deeply dedicated to intercultural communication. I argue that in many cases, journalists deploy the transborder competence they have developed in coverage of the Saar-Lor-Lux region as a platform for communicating Europe on a broader level. As such, regional transborder journalism contains elements that present the basis for a heretofore elusive "European journalism."...
