The aims of this research were to gain the Chinese aesthetic preference for the angles and proportions of midface through three-dimensional facial images processed by Pho-toshop CS6,to initially establish a normative database for the Chinese aesthetic character-istics of midface,to analyze the effects of demographic information on midface aesthetic preference,to summarize universal aesthetic status of Chinese midface, and to provide scientific large sample data for individualized and targeted treatment. We took a three-dimensional facial image of a 25-year-old Chinese woman, who had no plastic history and no facial deformity.According to literature review, midface angles and proportions including nasofrontal angle, nasolabial angle, intercanthanl width/nose width and ocular width/mouse width were modified to various values by Photoshop CS6.1333 Chinese raters(including 338 plastic surgery patients and 995 people with no plastic history)were recruited to offer their own demographic information such as gender, age, educational background, economic condition and plastic history, and choose the most ideal angle or proportion.T-test was carried out to investigate variations of aesthetic character-istics across gender, region of residence, range of facial images and plastic history.One-way Analysis of Variance(ANOVA)was used to distill differences of midface preferences across age, educational background, monthly income and expense. The Chinese ideal nasofrontal angle, nasolabial angle, intercanthanl width/nose width and ocular width/mouse width were 133.99°±5.49°,89.65°±5.55°,0.84±0.07 and 0.64±0.03.Women in North China preferred larger nasolabial angle, smaller nasofrontal angle and larger ocular width/mouse width than men in South China.Elderly Chinese with low education level, high income and high expense had an obvious preference for small intercanthanl width/nose width.Furthermore,Chinese with high monthly expense tended to be satisfied with larger ocular width/mouse width than people with low expense.Range of facial images significantly impacted individual nasofrontal angle and intercanthanl width/nose width preference. However,no differences were found in respect to midface preference between plastic surgery patients and people with no plastic history.Initial normative data for the Chinese aesthetic characteristics of midface were basi-cally concluded. We also summarized the relationship between midface aesthetic prefer-ence and demographic information, and the universal aesthetic status of Chinese midface, which might be useful for adjustment of bias in cosmetic patients. We successfully discov-eried visual aesthetic preference of Chinese people for plastic surgeons and maxillofacial surgeons, and might head into a new field of midface aesthetic standard by the method used in this research.
