The research is to study the Early-modern Lifen Houses in Yiyuan Area of Hankow in Wuhan City,Hubei Province.Through the spatial interpretation and diachronic comparison of the full sample, the study summarized Lifen's space patterns and its evolution. In addition,it traced the changes in its socio-economic and cultural environment, and demonstrated its developmental motives with the characteristics of both region and times. The study also summarized and valuated Lifen's contemporary changes. This dissertaion, apart from the introduction,is consisted of three main parts as below. The first part analyzed the context of Lifen House including the urban morphology before Wuhan opened the ports,as well as the society, economy and culture environment changes after it.In addition,it demonstrated the idea of the ancient Li Unit, the courtyard dwellings of southern China and the modern townhouses of the Occident countries in Lifen, and.explained its location in all the Li Houses in Early-Modern China. The second part documented the Lifen Houses in the area and analyzed their space pattern and development motivation. The third chapter built a sample base of all 137 Lifen during history by field investigation and literature study, including 100% research on 60 exsiting Lifen and a detailed study of 16 samples of various time and various types among them. The forth chapter made architectural typological analysis of their building layout, alley structure and building unit plan and demonstrated their transition from traditional space to western living environment through time.It also summarized their characteristics of the low-rise townhouses with high density and a horizontally multilevel public space,as well as how it made place that promoted neighbourhood interaction. The fifth chapter explained Lifen's development motivation from the environment during different development stages and highlighted its reginal uniqueness by comparing it with Shanghai Lilong Houses, revealing its ambiguity in both time and space. The third part showed the contemporary changes of Lifen Houses in the district. It expounded the two major changes in the multi-family cohousing mode and their role transition to historical and cultural blocks, and evaluated the multi-type transformation cases including spontaneous spatial transformation, combined with Shanghai Lilong of historical housing renovation at home and abroad, calling for multi-value and tangible improvements in residents' lives.Based on the analysis that incorporates points into planes, this study presented a systematic perspective and dynamic perspective through multi-level architectural typology analysis and quantitative induction with statistical methods, combined with vertical development contrast and horizontal contrast.to demonstrate the overall spatial pattern and evolution of Lifen Houses. This study is a supplement to the sample of earlymodern historical buildings in China,as well as to provide inspiration for the creation of contemporary living spaces.
