Analysis Of Architectural Space Of Jardine Matheson's Properties In Modern Hankow City

After the Second Opium War,Hankow was opened as a foreign trade port.In 1861,the British concession was first established in Hankow.Since then,including Jardine Matheson,over 10 foreign banks have set their branches in Hankow within British concession.The Hankow Branch of Jardine Matheson was established in 1862.During the period of the import and export trade in Hankow,Jardine Matheson constructed different types of buildings such as docks,godowns and residential dwellings.It was also the foreign bank that has the longest history in the British Concession with the largest real estate rights and the longest foreign trade period in the Hankow.So choosing Jardine Matheson as the topic of further research is of certain significance.This paper chooses the architecture of Jardine Matheson properties as the main research subject.Through literature analysis and field investigation of these properties,I classified them into commercial properties and residential properties according to their functions.In order to reveal the impacts of commercial properties and residential properties on part of the properties in modern Wuhan's and the city form of Hankow,I have conducted a space analysis of architectures of these properties.First of all,this paper sorts out the Jardine Matheson commercial real estate and analyzes the traditional forms of godowns and wood oil plant,compared with Jardine Matheson commercial real estates including godowns and wood oil plant to illustrate the development in the form of architecture of Jardine Matheson commercial real estate and the application of modern technological equipment.This section reveales the profound impact from Jardine Matheson,which is on behalf of the foreign business company,on the godowns and wood oil plant of Wuhan in terms of commerce and real estate.Second,this paper conducts specific analysis of the building layout and architectural form of the commercial and residential building of Jardine Matheson,the apartment of Jardine Matheson on Lockerbie Road,and the apartment of Jardine Matheson on Shengli Street.This paper also compared these three residential buildings with the same type of Victorian residential buildings in Britain,revealing the inherent impacts from UK on Jardine Matheson residential real estates during the same time period.Based on the analysis of the features in the temporal and space distribution of Jardine Matheson commercial real estate and residential real estate,the paper analyzes the influence of Jardine Matheson commercial real estate and residential real estate on the form of Hankow city,especially the form of Jardine Matheson residential real estate to form of Hankow traditional residential architecture.This paper explains the influence of Jardine Matheson residential real estate on the spatial pattern of Hankow in modern times and reveals the influence between the properties and architecture of foreign banks and the city layouts of Hankow.
