Research On History And Development Of Hospital Buildings In Canton(Since 1835)

Hospital buildings,unanimously considered as one of the most important public buildings,provide location for medical care and services.As the economically leading province,Guangdong enjoys a top medical care level.Since the time when the first western hospital was established in Guangzhou,the hospital buildings in Guangdong led the development of China for a long period.The many different kinds of building styles as well as the obvious local characters make them the excellent examples for further researches on overall hospital buildings.Learning for the history is always an efficient method of learning the news.Apparently,the development of hospital buildings in old times would help us to further understand their fundamentals and developing trends in Guangdong province,thus providing advanced design theory and strategy for future.To date,researches on Guangdong hospital buildings are limited and unsystematic.Therefore,in this dissertation,the hospital building development process in Guangdong since modern times is chronologically summarized and analyzed,and the correlated research margins will be supplemented.This dissertation establishes the framework of hospital building development in Guangdong,fulfills and improves the research on modern time buildings in Guangdong,and may provide solid basics for more detailed study.Besides,the factors that influence both historical and future hospital buildings in Guangdong are deeply analyzed.Useful experiences and ideas are concluded and design strategies are given by combining the highly evaluated design theories both home and abroad.This dissertation consists of three major sections:The first section provides background,including the introduction and review on hospital building development.This section implies the motivation and significance of this topic.It also concludes and lists the western and Chinese hospital building developments,which prepares for the details in the coming section.The second section gives the development of hospital buildings in Guangdong of different times.The development of hospital buildings in modern and contemporary times can be divided into 5 periods,which depends on social,economic,medical and political reasons.The author analyzed the features of hospital buildings of each period in sequence.By thorough investigation on hospital building examples,the features are analyzed in details in the respect of plan,style and climate.The third section mainly focus on the analysis of hospital building developments in Guangdong province and its future architectural design strategy.This section states the reasons that influence the development of Guangdong hospital buildings and analyzes the development process of hospital buildings.Besides,thechallenges that Guangdong hospital buildings may face in the future are also discussed.By combining the experiences from the hospital buildings in developed countries and the contemporary facts,the future strategy of Guangdong hospital buildings are given.This dissertation clarifies the development of hospital buildings in every era of Guangdong and concludes the major factors that influence the development of hospital buildings in Guangdong.The relationship to the political?economical? social and cultural influences are stated.The sustainable?human and geometrical analyses are carried out to explore the architectural design strategy of the contemporary hospital buildings in Guangdong in the respects of sites?architectural design and post operation.
