The buildings of Young Men’s Christian Association(Y.M.C.A.)is a special type of architecture in modern China.Since 1895 when the China’s first Y.M.C.A.building established till 1937 when the Japanese invasion of China outbroke,the Y.M.C.A.constructed a large quantity of buildings in China in full swing under the leadership of North America Association.These buildings widely distributed in China’s coastal port cities and inland center city.The buildings,which are important public buildings in the city,follow the site-selection principle of North American Y.M.C.A.and stationed in the city center.Y.M.C.A.oriented for urban youth.The building is a public space of great pleasure and importance to young elite and plays an important role in social reform and advocacy of new life.The function set of architecture of Y.M.C.A.building indicates a high degree of systematic and comprehensive.Modern Y.M.C.A.buildings was built,following the four-education-purpose architectural principles of the North American Y.M.C.A.,which are targeted in moral,intellectual,physical,and social education.Moreover,the building made some adjustment and formed its own unique spatial structure according to the climate environment,site conditions and budget,creating indoor gymnasium,cinema and other new types of space in public buildings.It played an important role in promoting the development of Chinese modern recreation building and entertainment and cultural building.This article describes the distribution of modern Chinese Y.M.C.A.and the status of building development,analytics the process of building and building elements,and sums up the construction strategy of the development of the Y.M.C.A.in china.In addition,the article tries to further explore how to realize the transfer of meaning through tangible architecture elements such as location,function configuration,space design,architectural form and construction technology on the circumstance that Y.M.C.A.serves for the purpose to transform the youth and to improve the society.
