As an important carrier of human history and culture, urban built heritage shapes its current form and spiritual connotation through a long period of development and accumulation. With its reform and opening up,China?s urban built heritage protection has made magnificent achievements and gained precious lesson learn, forming three levels of protection systems i.e.famous historical cities, historical quarters and relics architecture. However, with the rapid urbanization pace,a huge number of built heritage was destroyed by the lack of knowledge of its value;cultural value of built heritage was lost due to the constructive damage incurred by seemingly active protection, which lead to cultural gap or perish of culture.Human being as the subject who creating the unique culture was ignored. All of this has brought about the phenomena that antique towns across China resembles, which endangers the survival and existence of built heritage day by day and arouses widespread public concerns. With the gradual maturity in the field of international heritage theory and a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of culture connotation embodied in heritage, heritage protection practice has gradually changed from traditional architecture physical space protection to exploring and assessing built heritage integrity, diversity and development-oriented sustainability from aspects of social science like anthropology, cultural geography etc.Local uniqueness and specific context in which the heritage is generated has been attached unprecedented importance.Heritage protection focus has been shifted from simply putting forward conservation method to emphasizing discourse power and interests mechanism underlying in protection. And only in this way heritage management can be genuinely sustainable. In this thesis, the author analyzes the theories and practices status quo of urban built heritage in China, puts forward that urban built heritage shall be changed from excessive consumption narrative to the life-oriented cultural narrative based on the interpretation of international and domestic heritage theory. The urban built heritage shall be reviewed in the context of human-space-time correlation for a better understanding of itself. The characteristics of built heritage like social and humanistic features, spatial diversity and temporal evolution reflects that urban heritage is a complex of human, time and space. Therefore the basic cognitive concept of built heritage cultural narrative is established and then based on it the author explores value structure, assessment elements and the authentic existence of built heritage. In this dissertation, the author absorbs the essence from rapidly developed humanities and social sciences disciplinarians such as critical research on social space theory in philosophy, studies on local uniqueness of urban communities especially cultural studies in anthropology, ethnography and cultural geography;extracts the research framework from narratology so as to establish a Text-Context centered cultural narrative strategy.Narrative is employed not only as a basic foothold to understand all things but also as an operational strategy.Urban built heritage is treated as text to understand heritage textural structure by learning from the classical narratology thinking approach. While heritage text is interpreted from classical narratology perspective, more importantly, with thinking approach learned from post-classic narratology about context?s role in conceiving connotation,it shall be realized that the existence value of urban built heritage can be understood only in local context.Based on this,it should be noted that exploring on continuation of urban built heritage can be possible only in power context.Furthermore,a comprehensive strategy is established based on three aspects i.e.time-space layering relations,human-space intertextuality,man-man filed correlation.
