With the development of China's sports industry since the reform and opening up,the Pearl River Delta, with a subtropical climate, has hosted many significant sports events, promoting the development of sports buildings. However, the sports buildings in subtropical areas are notorious for high levels of energy consumption and carbon emission due to the hot and humid climate, their enormous size and high environmental demands.Since the sustainable development and low-carbon emissions of buildings are highly valued today, the climate-adaptivedesign of sports buildings that takes climate into account and aims to reduce the hours of air conditioning is a predominant approach for sports buildings to achieve low-carbon emissions. This research conducted a simulation study on the wind, solar radiation and light environment of the exterior and interior space of a sports building model that was established based on the data of over 30 medium and large-sized sports buildings in Pearl River Delta. The researcher analyzed the architecture elements related to wind, solar radiation and light environment of a sports building by “simulating – quantifying – comparing” the data, exploring how the variation of the elements affects the wind, solar radiation and light environment of a sports building and offering some suggestions on the climate-adaptive design strategies for the reference of the designs of the same type. The paper first introduced the research trends and results of sports buildings in the subtropical area, and stated the research objectives and framework.Secondly,it expounds the importance of climate design for the development of green buildings and summarizes the principles and key points of climate design for subtropical sports buildings.Thirdly,it reviewed the history of sports buildings in Pearl River Delta, and discussed the functional and spatial features of sports buildings in the subtropical area, finding out problems and the research methodology,as well as elaborating on the requirements and parameter settings.Fourthly,it explored the influence of variables in city space,a single building and the layout of buildings on the wind and solar radiation environment outside sports buildings.Fifthly,it analyzed the impacts of variables such as the building orientation, sunshades, and stands on the ventilation and shading of the open-air stadium.Sixthly,it explored how the variables such as the height of the stadium, the shape of the roof, the constitution of stadiums and the fenestration influence the ventilation and lighting of the indoor stadium. Finally, the study proposed a climate-adaptive design framework that responds to the wind, solar radiation and light environment of sports buildings in subtropical areas. The study is expected shed some light on the Climate-adaptive design of subtropical sports buildings, and help to the future research on the sustainable development and design of sports buildings.
