He developed the relevant theories in the study on the Book of Odes, such as view of the PREFACE(《诗序》),the relations between the Book of Odes and music, the explanation of "six-YI’’(六義),’Obscene Poems’’(淫诗),‘’two-NAN”(二南),and "Four-Initial’’(四始),the theory of the Book of Odes for education, and so on. About the exegesis of the Book of Odes, Chu-tzu has written Shi Jizhuan(《诗集传》), which includes Shizhuan Gangling(《诗传纲领》)and Shixu Bianshuo(《诗序辨说》).Therefore, the body of this dissertation is divided into two parts, which includes seven chapters. Beside that, there is an introduction as well as an conclusion. Part I is the research on Chu-tzu’s views on the Book of Odes, which mainly investigates some topics on Chu-tzu’s theory of the Book of Odes. Part Ⅱ is the monographic research on Shi Jizhuan, focusing on the advantages and disadvantages of Chu-tzu’s interpretation of the Book of Odes, together with Chu-tzu’s theory of the Book of Odes and his significance in academic history. The content of this dissertation is roughly as follow:The introduction, reviews the the study on the Book of Odes by Chu-tzu over the past three decades, and puts forward research proposals of this thesis. There are three chapters in Part I. Chapter One investigates Chu-tzu’s inheritance and criticism of Han-study of the Book of Odes,"the study on the Book of Odes in Song Dynasty" as well as his self reflection in the forming process of Chu-tzu’s views on the Book of Odes’study. And it is the criticism and inheritance, and Chu-tzu’s self-reflection, can make he reconstructs the study on the Book of Odes under the authority of the Han-study, and establishes the tone of the Song-study of the Book of Odes. Chapter Two investigates some questions of Chu-tzu’s view on the PREFACE, and tries to reveal the true propose of his researching the Book of Odes instead of little PREFACE, as well as its academic influences. Chapter Three discusses three questions in the study on the Book of Odes by Chu-tzu. The first one analyses Chu-tzu’s exegesis concept of the Book of Odes, including the aims, the standpoints and the principles. The second one argues that Chu-tzu’s exegesis of the Book Of Odes is not suspicious of canonical, which was usually considered by the academic circles, but only of suspect the editions of the Book of Odes by confucianists in Han Dynasty and its study by confucianists from Han Dynasty to Tang Dynasty. And in fact, this suggests that Chu-tzu’s subjective intention is to safeguard the classics, which means to maintain the reliability, sanctity and authority of the Book of Odes. The third is to investigate the two words HANYONG(涵詠)and WANWEI(玩味)which used by Chu-tzu, and then discuss their meanings, and point out that Chu-tzu HANYONG and WANWEI the Book of Odes is not to understand the literature features, but to absorb the ideal of sages and man of virtue and the laws of nature. In Part II, there are four chapters. Chapter Four investigates as the first monograph to completely and systematically explore rhyme regulations in the book of Odes, Shi ji zhuan’s achievements in the study of the rhymes’modes and positions in the Book of Odes. Chapter Five investigates the origin of data of exegesis in Shi Jizhuan, and then, discusses the achievements and shortages in exegesis of Shi Jizhuan, and its significance in exegesis of the Book Of Odes. This two chapters are the kind of research from the philology point of view, and the following two charpters are the kind of research from the study on documentations point of view. Chapter Six compares the Shi Jizhuan’s with Mao Shi(《毛诗》)in words, chapter-division and punctuating, and paragraph sequence, and then reveals its academic significance. Chapter Seven investigates Shi Jizhuan from the perspective of philology:one is to prove whether the eight-volume-edition of Shi Jizhuan should have been published in Early-Ming Dynasty, and probably between the year1384to1387. The other is to investigate Siku Zongmu’s improper criticism to Shi Jizhuan, and its reason. Then, this dissertation points out that Siku Zongmu’s reference value for write the history of the study on the Book of Odes Study should not be overestimated. The conclusion, summarizes the viewpoints of the whole disseration.
