The purpose of this thesis is to make a study about the treatments of doctor Wu Shang-xian, a Qing Dynasty famous medical doctor. He was a prominent character of the "external treatment for internal diseases" medical thought. Through literature and theoretical study and analysis of Wu’s book, "Liyue Pianwen", combined with related references in modern research achievements on external treatment, we will do a systemic analysis of Wu’s "external treatments for internal diseases" medical system. Concretely we will investigate the matter by the following height aspects:First:Brief history of traditional Chinese medicine external treatments.Second:Wu Shang-xian personal history and ideological background. Analyze include the aspects of social background, family background, and personal background.Third:Summary of Wu Shang-xian "Liyue Pianwen", content of the book, structure, and characteristics of the literary and medical aspects.Forth:Use the four fundamental aspects of Chinese medicine:theory, method, formula and herbs, to discuss Wu Shang-xian’s "Liyue Pianwen" external treatment for internal diseases. First is the theoretical aspect. Through the analysis of the origin of the theory and the characteristics of the theory in the "Liyue Pianwen", we will determinate the source of the Wu’s "external treatments for internal diseases" theory, and the implication of the classical books in the thoughts of Wu that lead to the unification of interior and exterior. The second aspect is the method. Through the analysis of the relation between the theory and the method, and of the characteristic of the therapeutic methods, to discover that Wu used the theory to establish the methods, and used the separated treatments of triple burner as main treatments, and other methods as supplements. The third aspect is the formulas. We will analyze the theoretical origins of the establishment of the formulas, the characteristics of the formulas, the relation between the formulas and the herbs, and the different forms of administration of these formulas. The fourth and last aspect is the herbs. We will make an analysis of the mechanism of absorption of the drugs and of the characteristics of use of herbs.Fifth:Through the analysis of the quote of different kind of book in the "Liyue Pianwen" by Wu, we will explain how he made the compatibility and the connection with so many different medical specialists thoughts.Sixth:Through the practical and deep analysis made before, we will reach relevant conclusions. Summary of Wu Shangxian’s medical thought characteristics, medical achievements and the impact on later generations.Seventh:Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Wu’s "external treatments for internal diseases" theory. We pointed out that Wu made a flexible use of the "theory, method, formula and herbs" in internal treatment adapted for the external treatment, he fully exerted the advantages of the external treatments, and he made an organic combination of external and internal treatments, to achieve an advanced situation of mastering.Eighth:Look forward about "external treatments for internal diseases" theory. We will mainly make the relation between the Wu’s external treatments and the acupuncture theories. In addition, we will make a comparative study of treatments with Western aromatherapy and Wu’s external treatments, in order to further the understanding of aromatherapy, and expand the treatments field of Wu’ external therapy theory.
