Hong Kong Insomnia Syndromes And The Tai Chi Intervention Study

ObjectiveTo discuss the trait of TCM syndrome of insomnia in Hongkong and the curative effect of taijiquan to improve the symptom of insomnia aiming to lay a foundation for the treatment based on syndrome differentiation of TCM in this field.MethodsThe research had collected the patients from section for outpatients of researcher,who must accord with the TCM and western medicine diagnostic code.Study1:Factor analysis were adopted for the the trait and distributing of TCM syndrome. Factor analysis was used for category the patients according to different syndromes.Study2:Random allocation to Taijiquan or health education for2months and assessment2months later. The main outcome measure was the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI),Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD),Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA)。Rank sum test and repeated measures GLM were use to analyze to analyze the changing of the score of the three scales.ResultsStudyl:Through the analysis the syndrome of insomnia was mainly divided into liver fire attacking the heart (38.3%),fire excess from yin deficiency (24.2%),heart blood and spleen qi deficiency (20%),heart and gallbladder qi deficiency (17.5%)。Study2:Subjects in the taijiquan condition showed significant improvements in PSQI global score and sleep parameters of rated sleep quality, time of falling asleep,habitual sleep efficiency, sleep medication taking,dysfunction in the daytime as well as in the HAMD and HAMA global score. They also showed significant improvements in PSQI global score as well as in the sleep parameters of rated sleep quality, time of falling asleep,habitual sleep efficiency, sleep medication taking,dysfunction in the daytime in the follow-up visit2months later.Conclusions:studyl:Life-style in HongKong influence the trait of TCM syndrome of insomnia in hongkong.Study2:Taijiquan can be considered a useful nonpharmacologic approach to improve sleep quality with moderate complaints and, thereby, has the potential to ameliorate sleep complaints possibly before syndromal insomnia develops.
