When the urbanization of China march toward the era of urban society as the main body, China’s economy, society and urbanization process continue to accelerate, city size expands rapidly and urban spatial structure changes dramatically. In China many large and medium-sized cities bring forward leapfrog development strategy. New town construction developed rapidly. On the basis of learning experiences and lessons from the western new town practice, job-housing balance concept already had enjoyed popular support; the new town practice of China should avoid the trap of job-housing separation. However, traffic jams becomes common in China’s big cities and their new towns, commuting time continues to grow, serious job-housing separation phenomenon occurs. In this context, based on job-housing perspective, taking a case study of Jiangbei, Xianlin and Dongshan sub-cities in Nanjing, this paper researches on the characteristics and relationship of residence and employment space of the three sub-cities, analyses development law and formation mechanism causing to job-housing separation, explores the control mode of balanced development, in order to promote the big cities to develop in a more healthy and harmonious form.On the basis of summary and conclusion of development of new town, residential space, employment space and job-housing balance theory, the paper establishes research framework and technical route of coordinated development mechanism of residential-employment space of new town in big city.Based on the overview of the domestic new town development and the process of new town construction in Nanjing, the paper completes total measurement of residence and employment space of the three sub-cities in Nanjing,, It is found that the current residential-employment situation in them is relatively balanced. After that the paper selects Taishan industrial park, Xianhe area and Baijiahu area as representative study areas, where the questionnaire survey and statistical data collection were accomplished. And features analysis of residential and employment space in the three study areas was completed by "single factor-main factor-cluster analysis "method, with statistical analysis software SPSS.Subsequently, with commuting characteristics of the residents and employed people as analysis point, residential-employment structural mismatch relationship was analyzed. By measuring residential-employment separation degree, the residential-employment mismatch features of the residents and employed people in the three study areas were compared and analyzed. Finally, the paper generalizes "law of aggregate balance", "law of structure matching", "law of commute traffic accommodating", "law of public facilities synchronizing" of residential-employment space coordinated development in new town, explores and discusses the underlying mechanism leading to residence-employment structural mismatch, and proposes the control mode and optimization strategy of residential-employment space balanced development in new town.
