Abstract/Summary:
Many cities in China have long histories and unique cultural traditions, which formed a rich urban heritage and distinctive urban characters. In the age of"experience economy", these historical and cultural resources are regarded as the cultural capital of urban development. Rich tourism resources, well-developed transport and infrastructure, and dense population are the favorable factors for tourism development in historic cities. The tourism which relies on culture heritage can provide funds for heritage conservation, express the its value, promotes developments of related industries, provides more jobs, stimulates economic growth, and improve physical environment. Tourism has become a catalyst to historic city redevelopment, which brings both positive and negative impact on economy and industrial development, social impact and city image, historical heritage and cultural interpretation, physical change of landscape, and demand of land use.The thesis studies the redevelopment of historic city from the perspective of tourism. It is both an extension and a breakthrough to the current theory of historic city redevelopment for adding tourism to the theoretical frame of"spatial-temporal characteristics"and"redevelopment elements"based on the full understanding of the cause, effect and character of the role that tourism plays in the historic city redevelopment. Effects of the two sides of tourism in the historic city redevelopment are exposed systematically and comprehensively, and the problems of the historic city redevelopment motivated by tourism are mainly divided in four aspects: function structure, space form, culture landscape and traffic system, after that, optimization strategies are proposed. It is a reference and guidance for the rational use of historical resources to promote urban redevelopment practices. The main contents of each chapter are as follows:The first chapter is introduction. After the introduction of background, related concepts and the present research status at home and abroad, the core question is raised: how to harmonize tourism with historic city redevelopment? The perspective of studying historic city redevelopment is from tourism; the research object is defined as tourist-historic area; the research methods, significance, thesis framework and innovative points are also clarified. The second chapter analyses the current problems of historic city redevelopment in China, compares the experiences and lessens with that of abroad cases after World Warâ…¡, analyses the cause and effects of historic city redevelopment motivated by tourism, and summarizes the main characters of the motive force. Through above processes, the guideline of research and the thesis research framework are formed. In the third chapter the historic city redevelopment motivated by tourism are analyzed respectively in space and time dimensions. In the former, the evolution of the core area and tourism development in historic cities, tourism spatial distribution in historic cities, internal spatial structure of tourist-historic areas are examined; In the latter, evolution of historical heritage, tourist-historic area cycle, the seasonal nature of space usage are examined. The fourth to seventh chapter follows the research idea of"character- principle- model- strategy". Four main factors are discussed deeply, namely, function structure, space form, culture landscape and traffic system. In the fourth chapter, the proposal of principles of functional reconstruction of the tourist-historic area is based on the analysis of its character of functional structure. Then attentions are focused on characteristics and problems of three basic models: functional continuing, functional overlapping and functional replacement, finally optimization strategies are put forward. In the fifth chapter, the proposal of principles of space form reconstruction of the tourist-historic area is based on the summary of its features. The optimization strategies aim at the characters, classification and problems of the space pattern of point, line and area. Their similarity and differences between the three patterns are also clarified. The sixth chapter summarizes the general characteristics of tourism culture landscape, proposes the culture landscape reconstruction principles of tourist-historic area, and its emphasis are mainly on the study of the characters and problems of the three methods of reconstruction, namely, preservation, context evolution, and juxtaposition of new and old, and finally the optimization strategies are provided. In the seventh chapter, the proposal of the principles of traffic reconstruction in tourist-historic area is based on the summary of its features. The characters and problems of the three levels are focused, namely, external and internal traffic of the tourist-historic area and the link traffic between them, then the optimization strategies are suggested. The eighth chapter is the conclusion of chapters all above. The summary of the problems and optimized strategies of the historic city redevelopment motivated by tourism are formed. And the integration of strategies is proposed. Finally, the analysis and evaluation of practical cases are ensued.
