Binjiang Times is a nongovernmental newspaper which enjoyed the greatest influence and longest publication duration in Harbin throughout the Minguo Period. It started publication in Harbin on the 15th March, 1921 and stopped publication on the 31st of October, 1937, lasting 16 and a half years with 4996 issues altogether. It went through three historic periods, namely Beiyang Military, Kuomintang and Japanese Puppet Governing. Binjiang Times keep aughentic daily records of the politics, economy in Harbin and the Northeast of China during the 16years of Minguo Period. Therefore, the historical materials in it are valuable.From the perspective of the research of news propagation, centered on the process of running the paper, the thesis makes an overall research of Binjiang Times on the background of starting the paper, its development, and the characteristics of the content. On the basis of the relatively complete originals of the paper, it excavates and reveals the major historical activities and facts. Based on it, the conclusion was drawn that the paper made a great contribution to promoting the local press industry and social changes of Harbin.The thesis consists of seven parts.The first chapter discusses the background of starting Binjiang Times, that is the forming of Harbin-immigrant city, the high-speed development of the industry of Harbin and the taking off of Harbin city press business.The second chapter focuses on the ups and downs of the paper, including the founder, Fan jieqing, his early-year activities and his ideology of running papers. It also analyses the process of starting the paper.The third chapter mainly analyses the characteristics of news reports of Binjiang Times, which is divided into 2 parts. The first half (1921-1932) and the second half (1932-1937). The former analyses the characteristic of news reports and patriotism while the latter focuses on how the paper reported the news tactfully to avoid being stopped by the Japanese Puppet Government.The fourth chapter discusses the characteristics and ideology tendency of the editorials and the short commentaries.The fifth chapter deals with the supplements of the paper- literature and art, Xiaoxianlu and Binjiang Pictorial so as to illustrate its function of educating and inspiring readers.Chapter six deals with the advertisements in Binjiang Times. It attempts to analyse the changes happened in the modern society of Harbin by analysing the classification, changing, charging and its social and cultural functions of the paper.Chapter seven talks about the interaction between the paper and it's readers."Voices of Readers"was a special column which provided the platform of interaction.The conclusion summarizes, from three aspects, the historical functions of Binjiang Times and the enlightenment obtained from the research.
