Researchers have had different understandings of Modern Times through the ages, while most of them focus on its urbanism, authors and editor Shi zhecun. The explanations for why Modern Times waxed and waned quickly were different, insufficiency and simplistic. In fact, the real situation was very complicated, from which we could find a different approach to study Modern Times and those magazines with the same fates. Through such kind of research, it was possible to draw a real picture of the history of literature and Modern Times. Then, it would be able to find out how the periodicals with middle-of-the-road standpoint developed and have a deep thought of the history of literature and magazine.This paper tries to discuss the above-mentioned questions and solve the problems as follows. Firstly, the reasons for Modern Times' flourish were accurate commercialization orientation, aesthetic literature pursuit, solidarity with readers and authors, and well-times appearance. Secondly, the cause for Modern Times' decline was that its literature pursuit and editing idea went against with the situation. As an idealist, Modern Times failed to grasp the current situation. Thirdly, it has a profound thought about Modern Times from the aspects of the history of literature and cultural meaning. Modern Times was a complicated case. On one hand, it was a realist with commercial pursuit; on the other hand, it was also an idealist with closeness and van ward spirit. As for its editing thought, both seasonality and paradox could be found. Its flourish was owing to the war, while its declination also connected with the attack of revolution upsurge. The tragedy of Modern Times was because of its failure to grasp the current situation whether on its literature pursuit or the relationship between literature and politics.Modern limes' tragedy reflected two rules of the history of literature: As a periodical with pure literature pursuit, its editing thought couldn't evade the real situation at that time. The real situation was changing quickly, so if the editing thought couldn't adapt to it, then the gap between the purpose and result would become wider and wider. At that era when literature had a close relationship with politics, a magazine pursuing middle-of-the-road standpoint was difficult to survive.
