From the end of 19 century to the beginning of 20 century, a kind of culture style of consumption culture commodity, popular culture sprang up, which has close relation to the contemporary industrial production and be produced and copied in great quantity in the way of industry. From then on, popular culture attracted the attention of the theory circle and followed with some research. However, most of these researches refer to the political study of popular culture and reveal basically the struggle between the supremacy and the resistance of popular culture, while less attention has been paid to the popular texts. So this essay thinks that the popular texts not only have the basic and the key function in popular culture, but also form a series of standardize producing, composing and operating methods with the history of great achievements in the last one hundred years. So the theory of the culture texts is really necessary in practice.The popular texts refer to those standardize and innovatory ones which produced by modern social cultural industry and with a great number of consumers. It includes the popular literature works, movies, TV plays, pop songs, street dance, advertisements, fashion and other styles of texts. The meticulous study of this essay only refers to the formula, the key theory concept of the popular texts.The formula of the popular texts has two meanings: one is its general meaning, which has the synonym meaning with inheritance. The other is as the characteristic of the popular texts that has the both meaning of inheritance and innovation, but the former takes the lead. The word"formula"which frequently appears in this essay mainly refers to the latter meaning, but sometimes the former meaning also be used. Since there are some differences between the"formula"and the"genres"in popular texts, so we can say that the"formula"is the resource and the"genres"is the course. The resources possess the characteristic of universality while the genres have the characteristic of epoch, history and culture.The formula of the popular texts is provided with the characteristic of the patterned narration, the symbolic language and the producer texts. And it has a developing course, in which the formula begins from"the disposal formula"to"the formula disposal"and then backs to"the disposal formula". What so called"the disposal formula"refers to the classical formula of the popular texts. This kind of formulas usually appears as the relative stable collocation of narrative style, image arrangement and technique of expression in the texts."The disposal formula"of the popular texts usually appears as the extension of the quintessential texts structure and the refurbished version of the classical dramatic structure. It possesses the characteristic of novelization, archetype, dominant and authoritativeness."The formula disposal"is a kind of textual formulas that break the original disposal formula and choose all kinds of formulas and the components from the quintessential texts randomly, then rearrange and recompose in a new way. Here,"formula"refers to the original disposal formula, while"disposal"refers to the new combinative or compositive method after breaking the original disposal formula. There are about two kinds of collocation style of the formula disposal: one is making up; the other is parody.The developing course, in which the formula begins from"the disposal formula"to"the formula disposal"and then backs to"the disposal formula", actually expresses as the course, in which the formula originates from the typal texts to the antitypal texts and then backs to the typal texts. This is what we say the typal way of the popular texts.The popular textual formulas express as two kinds of basic structural styles in certain texts: the novelized structure and the"nonsense"structure. The novelized structure is a kind of structural styles, which takes"story-telling"as the key or mainstay, and it is composed by the lackless and the interrelated"details"and"functions"in the development of the textual plots. Different from the novelized quintessential texts, it refers to the novelized expression of the plots. The dramatic plot form is the typical style of the novelized structure; meanwhile, there are lots of alterations of the typical style.The typical expression of the"nonsense"structure is to imitate or transplant the story, plots and other expressive factors from the quintessential texts and the novelized popular texts, then to make up, parody, write in reverse and rearrange, in order to break the orders, dissociate orthodox semantic, revel freely in styles and follow with cynicism. It is the textual structure with parody and formula disposal. Although the"nonsense"popular text appears in the post-industrial society, it has deep historical origins.The popular textual type is to give a kind of texts the medium of certain meaning. It has the characteristic of delivery and vagueness. That means the certain meaning of a kind of popular textual type is founded from the very beginning of the famous and popular text that makes this type succeed. After that almost all this type of popular texts follow the original meaning and become the repeaters of its formularized meaning. So most of the popular textual works can show a kind of meaningless and"empty"statue in its meaning product. The popular texts possess the stereoscopic and complicated meaning structure that composed by various of factors, such as the common view of value, the symbolic meaning of reality, the content of ideology and the profound philosophical meaning.The writers of the popular texts are so called"the writers in the formula"or"the writers in the types", who make innovations with formulas and types. Here, the innovations refer to the kind of ones that"bring forth new ideas in the formula"or"bring forth new ideas in the type". The characteristic of the popular texts is its distinctness in types, while the innovation of the popular texts is to innovate the types. The most innovatory works are the successful"very beginner"of a certain type and the classical representative works of this type. And large quantities of such works make a special innovatory chain of the popular textual formula.The formula and the type of the popular texts are the productive standard and the quality requirement of the cultural products. The existence of such productive standard and quality requirement makes the production of the popular texts present as the way of formulate production. It is a kind of standard production according to all kinds of productive standards in"the disposal formula"and"the formula disposal"of the popular texts. Firstly, this kind of production appears as the assembly line productive course; secondly, the production of the popular texts is a special cultural production with both materiality and ideology in it, and it do not refuse the changes and the innovations; thirdly, the marvelous phenomenon forms the commercial symbols of the popular texts. The commercialization of the popular texts is inevitable, but the over-commercialization will be harmful to the art quality of the cultural production, further more, it will be harmful to the development of the cultural industry.There are certain quantity of the popular texts have been or being classicalized. The existence of this kind of phenomenon dues to the consultative result to be made by the masses, who are the acceptors of the texts, the experts and scholars, and the modern social pluralistic language circumstances. The"classics"in modern society have already become the"warehouse"to store up all the textual"inventions"in order to preserve the"skill models"of various of texts and to reflect the"wisdom models"of human being. Even though things like this, the classicalization of the popular texts in many circumstances at present time are still helped to bring about with the prerequisite of lifting the standards of the quintessential texts, but not to consider or collect the popular texts as a kind of texts that can not be substitute for. In fact, the appearance of the way of discussion and judgment about the new culture and the new texts are really looking forward with the development of the contemporary culture and the change of the texts.
