At the outset of 2005,China faced a new but long-existed task-constructing a harmonic society. This thesis tries to establish a "harmonic environment for mass communication" accordant with the development of society by retrospecting and summarizing the theories of the roles of mass communication and the current situation of Chinese mass media.The research retrospects related achievements in the history of communication studies along two routes: empirical and theoretical . The focus is on the roles of mass communication, which is the theoretical basis for the research.To construct a harmonic communicative environment, the first order of business is to analyze "unharmonic" factors in our countries mass communication. This research attempts to identify gains and losses of harmonic communicative environment through the analyses and observations of mass media activities, especially the study of five much-disputed phenomena as: media commercialization, infortainment,hidden interview, abuse of media power, the embodiment of humanism.The author proposes that the establishment of harmonic communicative environment entail cooperation among government, media and audience. The government's regulation is essential to the development of media. By taking legal and administrative measures to regulate and educate media, media workers and audience ,the government should protect the interests of state ,society , people ,and render smooth flow of information the foremost goal.The self-regulation within the media is equally important, which has been proved by the practice in and off domestic. Strengthening self-regulation and undertaking positive role in society is the premise for Chinese media to enjoy an advantageous environment.The last but not the least is the cultivation of audience's quality, awareness. The audience have their own rights, which should be confirmed by society and media.
