The virtual driving simulation system based on Virtual Reality is also named Driving Simulator or Vehicle Driving Simulator. It is a simulation equipment which can simulate driving behaviors and help the user to get real driving feeling. It integrates many advanced technologies, such as sensor, computer, simulation and 3D real-time animation of the scene, computer interface, artificial intelligence, data communication, network, multimedia, the theory and the method of Ergonomics, and so on. The dissertation focuses on the Visual System of Vehicle Simulator, and lays emphases on the shortcomings and disadvantages of Driving Simulator at home and abroad.The theory of modeling, texture and special effects, distributed multi-channel display with immersion, algorithm and technologies of distributed virtual interaction and collision detection have been deeply researched, which have been successfully used in system development, and made effective simulation results. The main achievements and innovations of the dissertation are as follows:(1) Deeply researched the modeling methods, which combine the image modeling with the geometry modeling together and help to achieve better simulating effects with less system cost; developed an optimized and high-fidelity virtual visual environment based on the '"Shader" technology in Cg, realized some special effects on fluid and multi-texture level of some models in the virtual environment.(2) The research on the special effects in visual system, which includes simulation of the particle effect (fog, rain and snow), sound effect. GPS, instrument panel simulation, rending technologies of baking based on global illumination, etc. It can be used to improve the visual effects in the visual system of the driving simulator.(3) Realized the distributed multi-channel project and display system of high quality, including the combination of cylinder, cube (or cave) and rectangle; developed a deep immersion virtual driving environment that satisfies the special requirements of immersive virtual driving training system, which is very valuable for spread ability.(4) Achieved the distributed and real-time session and interactive driving in the same scene with multi-client based on network; solved the problem on traffic light system in virtual city; realized the real-time and visible expression of the damage in traffic accidents and the actual feeling of driving.(5) From the point of art feature and aesthetics taste, we practiced to combine the art with aesthetics in the design of virtual visual system, which provides the theoretical support of art and aesthetics for the development and virtual experience of visual system.The theories of art and aesthetics discussed in the dissertation are based on the development of driving simulator visual system and the technology of virtual reality. But they are also fit for all the other digital graphic design whether based on Virtual Reality or not. The interactive control of driving simulator visual system is a type of concrete program, which need scientific ideas and advanced technologies. However, the process of virtual visual effects has many unsure factors and needs intuition, which belongs to art field. If the development of the virtual visual system can be combined with art design, which can mix the experience of aesthetics with the whole immersion and interaction process of virtual scene, it will greatly extend the intension of virtual reality simulating system and can reflect the human-oriented idea. The idea combines art with science, which is the theoretical instruction of the author's research—the development of driving simulator visual system based on virtual reality.
