The Unified Theory Of Communication Studies

Communication studies as a discipline of social sciences was originated in the US in 1940s. Over 5 decades development, the theories of the discipline have been very much enriched and systematic, including primarily the scientism and humanism styles. Under the circumstances that our modern and postmodern life of human being in the late 20th and early 21st century goes to sophistication and be more and more problematic, people rely much on better communication or dialogues to solve conflicts in social lives. Some scholars believe that communication can be critically important. However, Schramm has said the study has always been at crossroads, and the fundamental part of the communication theories appears to be at conflict and need to be integrated.Social interest and financial funds had played an important role in the birth of communication studies in the US, which focus itself in the study on mass media effects. With better and better application of scientific research methods, communication studies finally established its identity as a discipline of social sciences. Chicago school, among others, is an important source in the building of theories. As a result, the pre-suppositions in disharmony are critical in future development and need to be re-examined. The criticism in communication theories actually introduces any unselected values into media studies. McLuhan's theories are powerful in arousing people's interest in media development and its impact to modern life. Cultural studies in the UK tried to replace"communication"with"culture"in the movement of the so-called transformation of communication studies. Semeiology and its philosophical roots is another force in dealing with communication studies'"better theory on better bases"research strategy. It seems to be in necessity that a philosophical solution is needed in face of conflicts between scientism and humanism in the communication studies and theories.When we try to find out philosophically one thing in common among different styles of communication theories, epistemology can be used in viewing the communication theories as a body in problem of knowledge. The paper argues that the status quo of communication theories has inner logical flaws that cause all the splits. The paper has found in philosophical analysis that communication theories has no center, and the question and subject of the paper boils down to the question of"how a logically able theory of communication obtains its center".Transcendental argument helps us to put forward a philosophically pure concept of"communication", which because of its pureness is able to be a central concept and rewrite all the existing theories of communication. When trying to use the new concept of"communication"to solve the theoretical problems of communication studies, the paper build a solid base of the Unified Theory of Communication on one hand, and on the other, with first ever large scale involvement of philosophy, the communication studies enter into a period of transformation since Schramm's historical achievement in 1940s. This transformation movement relates much to modernity problem, to large-scale movement of thoughts and culture in globalization, to the ideal of harmony going beyond politics, to the old but still powerful request on thought to be able to put into practice.
