Along the way, understanding the performance of the Internet is a remarkably challenging problem. This challenge is all the more important because of the increasingly significant role the Internet has come to play in society. The research on the methodology of measurement and analysis of the Internet dynamics is a project that needs developing in our country. It is the basis of scientific management and efficient control of the Internet and also the foundation of the next generation Internet (NGI).The dissertation studies measurement infrastructure, performance metrics, and analysis methodology of the Internet, and presents the measurement and analysis methodology with various measurement parameters. Then the first large-scale measurement is made in 43 end-to-end Internet paths via NIMI measurement platform installed in 6 cities in China. The concept and location algorithm of delay bottleneck is presented, and the end-to-end routing measurement infrastructure WTracer is proposed in the dissertation. We then measure and analyze the delay dynamics via WTracer between 47 Internet sites in the worldwide. With twice measurements, several network characteristics are studied such as delay bottleneck, the relationship between delay distribution and packet loss rate, packet loss rate and TCP throughput and many valuable conclusions are drawn. The active application probing mode is also presented in the dissertation, which can compensate the deficiency of traditional network management systems mainly taking-care-of network equipments. Then a large-scale network performance measurement and analysis system NIPMAS is designed and developed, which can monitor the end-to-end user applications and application paths, monitor the third-party paths conveniently and assure the safety and privacy of users. NIPMAS can be used in many areas such as large-scale corporations, telecommunications, finances, ISPs and insurances. The major contributions of this dissertation are summarized as follows:(1) The concept and locating algorithm of delay bottleneck is proposed, which analyzes the main links affecting network speed and delay characteristics, and the adjusting algorithms of slow-ICMP router and unresponsive nodes are put forward. Through...
