The optical packet switching network is the necessary tendency in the development of all optical network. At the present time, the bottleneck in the optical packet switching network is the optical buffer technology. The development situation of the fiber communication and optical communication network were expatiated systematically in this paper. It was introduced that the wavelength division multiplex technology and its application in intending all optical network, the structure and node of the optical packet switching network, the key technology of the node and the frame format of the optical packet. The study on optical buffer technology was emphasized in the paper. And it was analyzed and generalized profoundly. The merits and faults of each optical buffer technology were analyzed in detail. And the solution to conflict in the optical packet switching network was offered. In addition, a node of the optical packet switching network was designed and emulated experimentally.Based on the research of optical buffer technology, the node with the ability of the optical buffer was designed in the optical packet switching network. And the control algorithm of the node was supplied as well. According to the algorithm, the performance of the node was emulated in the paper. The general emulator program of the node was developed and the simulation results were explained.In the practical application, the number of the network node's port and the number of the wavelength in every fiber to be designed could be determined according to the simulation results so as to realize the maximum ratio of the performance and price.
