As an important task in the field of ancient Chinese books study, collation of ancient documents is the base of academic research, especially of the research on ancient classics. Through the collection of many related materials, with the combination of knowledge on collation, edition study, linguistics and Chinese cultural history, etc., the author of this dissertation centers upon Zhong Hua Shu Ju's very famous revised edition of Han Shu, and has offered a comparatively systematic and thorough collated inspection on Han Shu from the perspective of ancient documents study. It is not only an integral part in the documentary research of Han Shu , but also a significant elementary work for the whole systematic study of Han Shu.This dissertation discusses the significance of collation on Han Shu, deeply explores both the history and current situation of this work. Through the comparative analysis on Zhong Hua Shu Ju's revised edition of Han Shu and Wand Xian Qian's edition with added notes, which is the base of former one, the author offers many examples and points out careless omissions and errors in Zhong Hua Shu Ju's revised edition both in the absorption of new academic achievements and the revision of original texts, such as wrong modification, wrong addition and deletion of words, etc.Generally speaking, there do exist many limitations in Zhong Hua Shu Ju's revised edition of Han Shu ,such as carelessness in revision ,typesetting mistakes, etc. Therefore, it is definitely necessary for scholars to absorb ,collect and inspect new academic achievements abundantly under the guidance of collating theory of ancient documents and scientific methods, to make both grand and profound exploration on the text of Han Shu ,and to have further discussion on such questions which relate to historical data, Han Shu's original texts, its collation and punctuation, etc. The efforts mentioned above should be the first step to the recompilation of new edition of this classic ,and are urgent not only for the further development of Han Shu's study in new century, but also for the enrichment of basic theories on ancient documents, especially the consummation of theory on collation. In 21th century , a new edition of Han Shu which is more scientific, more accurate and could represent contemporary academic level will be urgently required by the academic circle.
