Internet stongly impact the daily life of human beings. Optical communications facilitates the data transmission of Internet, while left a network-bottleneck at signal processing, which remains opto-electronic (OEO) conversion in the switching node currently. All-optical signal processing offers significant advantages to all-optical networks, including protocol and format independence and substantial cost savings from reduced numbers of OEO interfaces. This dissertation aims to tackle several tough issues of all-optical processing technology, such as all-optical logic devices, self-synchronization, header extraction, label swapping and optical passive devices. In Part I, we propose and demonstrate several schemes on all-optical logic gates, including all-optical NAND gate based on SOA-MZI configuration in Chapter 2, all-optical AND gate and NOT gate based on asymmetric SOA-MZI configuration in Chapter 3. The effect of the scheme parameters on the design has been discussed. We show the performance of each scheme by numerical simulation. In Part II, a novel self-synchronization scheme utilizing XGM effect in an SOA and interfering in a DI is proposed and numerically demonstrated in Chapter 4.2. With proper design of the scheme parameters, this scheme can be used for all-optical head extraction, which is demonstrated in Chapter 5. We also propose and demonstrate another self-synchronization scheme utilizing XGM and SPM effect in an SOA in Chapter 4.3. The design parameters have been analyzed and optimized to improve the system performance.Part III gives a presentation of some novel optical passive devices, including optical circulators in Chapter 7, optical isolators in Chapter 8, magneto-optical switches in Chapter 9 and optical interleavers in Chapter 10. Among them, theoretical and experimental validations have been employed on circulators, isolators and optomagnetic switches. While for 2 kind of interleavers design, we show their performance by detailed numerical simulations.
