All-optical packet switching is widely used in high-speed optical network, Optical packet is consist of header and payload. In order to implement the high-speed all-optical switching function, the header must be rapidly extracted and processed. Our lab is carrying out a project of all-optical header extraction and all-optical comparator. since a code generator produce is expensive, and can not fully meet the need of laboratory project. In order to make the research work go on wheels, a programmable 1550nm optical signal source is the key to simulate the header.The main work of this thesis is to design and develop a programmable 1550nm optical signal source. debugging, assembling and testing it to make some corresponding improvement, so that the programmable 1550nm optical signal source can meet the need of the all-optical header extraction and all-optical comparator project.This programmable optical signal source, can be used to change the data sequence according to user's requirement and directly export optical signal in wavelength 1550nm. It is consist of four parts---AC driver circuit, temperature control circuit, display circuit, signal processing circuit. In order to debug them easily, and also increase the versatility of the circuit boards, the thesis adopts four circuit boards to achieve the function of these four parts respectively. AC driver circuit, temperature control circuit, display circuit, signal processing circuit are designed and debugged. MAX3669 laser driver IC, temperature control chip, Spartan-3 FPGA chip of XILINX Inc., and DFB laser of FURUKAWA Company are used. The optical signal source is cheap, its maximum rate is 622Mbps, and its maximum optical power is 10mW. Lots of functions can be achieved such as DC bias, AC modulation, temperature control, and realize real-time control and display. This optical signal source can simulate header under the control of FPGA program in the experiment, and can also be used as a high-power DC source.
