Growth in the union place of literature and news, culture and the newspaper, the supplement is the national tradition of the Chinese newspaper. On the one hand, the newspaper supplement becomes the media carrier of literature and art from the day of emerging, impelling the cultural development. On the other hand, from the filler to the back pages of newspaper and to the indispensable parts of the newspaper (including the news, comment, advertisement, supplement), the newspaper supplement becomes the mark of high grade culture and the another battle field of the competition of journalism. The dual particularity of the supplement makes it fully reflect the development of newspaper industry and the change of culture, and is restricted by them, meanwhile reflects the change of social culture.The 1990s is the time, which the reform of Chinese social culture deepens and intensifies, and also the time that the newspaper supplement changes tremendously. The supplement tradition of elite, which established since the New Culture Movement received the great impact in the 1990s. The literature supplement which once created the brilliant achievement in China' s modern journalism history and literature history, moved towards the edge and split up gradually. Under the market-based orientation, the measurement of the ability to make profit of typography often makes the supplement in the awkward state to. Reducing thesupplement becomes a kind of phenomenon of the newspaper eager for quick success in the middle and later periods of the 1990s .The newspaper becomes thicker and thicker, but the culture space of the supplement receives great extrusion.
