China's newspaper has seen popularization for more than 20 years, while there is still no generally accepted view on this phenomenon. Disputes have long existed, and people with different ideals of popularization started different popular newspapers in history. On the basis of combing various existed theories, the study tries to give the phenomenon a full picture. The study is composed of five parts: the meaning of newspapers' popularization; the process of popularization; popular newspapers' role in society; the way popular newspapers influencing readers; news style of popular newspapers.There are three kinds of popularization in China's history as following. 1.popularizing newspapers to teach readers. Wuxu Reformation Party, Revolution Party of the bourgeoisie and May fourth elites successively published popular newspapers like this. By way of advocating modern Chinese, they made it easier for the masses to read their newspapers and accept the views they publicized. 2.popularizing newspapers to publicize ideology and organize the people for revolution. The progressive culture group gave birth to the journalism ideology in 1930s, which was inherited and developed by chairman Mao in 1940s and became the official journalism thought ever since new China's establishment. 3.popularizing newspapers to serve the masses. Newspapers like this are all commodities, whose function is to entertain readers and provide them with useful news and information. Both Penny Newspapers in American and Shen Daily(shenbao,1872)in old Shanghai are of this kind. Newspapers' popularization in new ages, the one the study focuses on, is of the third kind above and is started by reforming popular newspapers of the second kind existed.The study takes popularization as series of principles on how to start a newspaper, which include: 1.to run a newspaper for mass, not elite; 2.to manage newspaper as business and take papers as commodities; 3.to edit newspaper as newspaper, not "viewspaper ". Among all the principles, the study considers the first one essential, by which the two others can be given interpretations. When starting newspapers as business, the boss is urged to publish newspapers as many as possible on condition of making money. Where there is profit, where there is popular newspaper, the bible of popularization popularizes newspapers to the masses. As commodities, popular newspapers serve readers, the costumers, basically by providing varied useful news and information to make them know the social environment better. No one likes newspapers to publicize government's regulations and instructions in bureaucratic jargon.The popularization of China's newspaper in new ages began with restructuring existed newspaper industry, including new-type papers' emergence and traditional papers' reforming. The former one is reflected in the revival of evening newspaper," weekend edition phenomenon" , the booming urban newspapers, the segment of the newspaper market; the later one in the decline of peasant's newspapers, the restructuring of professional newspapers, as well as the reforms of the Party'snewspaper. Carried out on both sides, together with the gradual way the popularization proceeded added more complexity to people's distinguishing the popular newspapers from others. Generally speaking, the newly-born and market-oriented newspapers are usually popular ones and even if the newspapers being reformed are not popular ones, they usually involve some popular elements to different extents. The study, with the development of newspaper structure as its combining thread, deals with the process of newspapers' popularization in our country, which has been undergoing ever since the 1980s.Popularization, with its unique logics, is the determinative force of newspapers' social roles. Newspapers in our country have undergone the switch of social roles from quasi-administrative body to commodity. The basic functions also had switched from educating and organizing people to removing the uncertainty and working for the social harmony. I...
