Mass customization is an advanced production mode in 21st century that combines two opposite patterns, customization production and mass production, together. It keeps low production cost and fast delivery time, while meeting individual customers' needs. Firstly, this paper analyzes the evolution trends of modern manufacturing system. Secondly, the background and process of mass customization's evolvement are discussed in detail from the aspects of the change of enterprises' environments and the evolution of manufacturing production styles. Then based on current research achievements, the meanings of mass customization and its inner relationship with Lean Production and Agile Manufacturing are analyzed in different views; the researching route and main focuses of this paper are put forward.On the base of analyzing the typical production management patterns, the Push/Pull manufacturing model based on postponement technology is firstly presented, in order to meet the demands of Mass Customization. This model integrates the two different production patterns, Push and Pull, to reduce inventory, production costs and production time. Before the customer order decoupling point, common parts and selective components are produced via push of plan with some inventory. After the customer order decoupling point, customization production is conducted by pull of orders. The MRP in enterprise level is divided into various MRPs in workshop level to reduce data volume and ensure reliability. The JIT strategy is also integrated into MRPII system in the Push/Pull manufacturing pattern. In virtue of the reengineering technologies of BOM, BOM with parameters that fits the product structure of Mass Customization is discussed to organize product families. A BOM without information of orders can be conveniently changed into the BOM corresponding to orders with the help of configuration rules library. Then a kind of information classifying and coding method for Mass Customization is proposed. This method takes all the aspects in product lifecycle into consideration, adopts the parallel structure of identification code and classifying code in combination and applies the essence of "class object" to solve the information coding problems of customized components. This method makes it possible to share and integrate the information in enterprise or among partners.According to the product design features of Mass Customization, the model of product family consisted of customer model, function model, principle model andstructure model is given in this paper. The relations among these four models are constructed through mapping, in order to hear the voice of customers and support variant design of products. Then, this paper studies key technologies of product family modeling, and presents a modeling method of product requirements for Mass Customization. This modeling method maps the history data of products and applies the knowledge of related experts to build product requirements templates. By setting up products requirements topology structure and its requirements template, and changing products' demands into functional requirements, the method realizes the products' requirements modeling. This method simplifies the communicative and interactive process between customers and designers, inherits the historical products' data and experts' knowledge, improves the requirements analysis level; and meets the customization requirements. Also, standardization and regularization technology based on rationalization engineering is researched. Moreover, a kind of modularization design method of product family for Mass Customization is put forward: Firstly, by dividing principle modules according to fuzzy classified analysis, this method realizes releasing the coupling of design matrix and ensures the independence of modules.
