The competitions among higher educations are based on disciplines. The first-class disciplines contribute a lot to the outstanding of first-class universities around the world. The ongoing concerns to the scientific development trend, the caution to the discipline development plan, the emphasis to the personnel training quality, and the competition to various resources such as talents, outlay and equipment, are all targeted at the improvement of disciplinary competition. Accordingly, it is significant to research the theoretical problems and explore the evaluation methods of the competitive ability of various disciplines of higher education so as to understand comprehensively and objectively the status quo of the competitive ability, discover the distances and advantages of disciplines evaluated, excavate competitive potential, inspire the proactive spirit of the departments elected, and promote the discipline construction and development.The dissertation is divided into two parts-theoretical analysis and empirical research.The first part includes the first three chapters. Chapter One introduces the significance of the research, defines the disciplines, competitive ability, disciplinary competitive ability, etc., and discusses the relationship between the core competitive ability and other competitive abilities of disciplines.Chapter Two constructs the theoretical analysis framework by addressing the noumenal and functional features of the disciplines in higher education, and discussing the discipline development and construction. Accordingly, the empirical analysis model concerned with the relationship of competitive strength and potential is proposed.Chapter Three provides valuable references to research on evaluations of the competitive ability through the analysis and comments on the disciplines of USA and China and their respective evaluation index systems on competitive ability.The empirical research covers the following four chapters, and makes detailed discussion on the evaluation methods.Chapter Four is about factor analysis. Through three aspects-results, efficiency and influential resources, it constructs evaluation index system and makes analysis, then consolidates different models and forms an integrated evaluation index system. The index system takes the index cluster of competitive strengths as primary, the index cluster of competitive potential as complimentary, and uses competitive potential operator to describe the function relationship of evaluations of the disciplinary competitive ability. The subjective and objective points are combined to provide an evaluation model of disciplinary competitive ability.Chapter Five discusses connotation analysis. Different from the factor analysis which takes statistics as primary, it relies mainly on the experts as its evaluation resources; that is, it makes judgment and evaluation by utilizing the knowledge and experiences of experts concerned with the disciplinary competitive ability. Due to this, it is also called soft evaluation method. The dissertation constructs a soft evaluation index system corresponding to the hard evaluation index system, provides an integrated combination model and assorted model, and introduces FHW into the research on the evaluation on the disciplinary competitive ability. Based on the hard one, the soft system is suitable to make analysis and diagnosis, and make its recommendations.Chapter Six is post analysis (contrast discrepancy). Leading the evaluation of disciplinarycompetitive ability to operation level, the post analysis intends to bridge the theoretical methods and practical operations. The dissertation provides a basis model and operation process and makes case studies.The above three methods are mainly concerned with the objective descriptions of the status of the disciplinary competitive ability so as to use index to reflect the status and level of the disciplinary competitive ability, while making less researches on the pre-warning index concerned with the changing tendency, less analysis and discu...
