Scholar-painting was renovated during the Yuan Dynasty. The evolution began with Chien sheen(錢é¸) and Chao mug-fu(趙åŸé «) leading fellow painters through the rigid past, similar to Moses leading his Jewish fellow-man fleeing from the Egyptian. The Yuan dynasty also represented tremendous restrictions and hardship on scholar. But thankful to this turbulent era,a landscape painting legend was born. The second chapter illustrates the life of Huang gongwang.Huang missed the examination in 1315 AD not because of his imprisonment, but it was by his own will, and the same can be said for his decision to follow Chang leu(ç« é—¾) in pursuing a more prospectful future. Most of his crucial determinations were based upon surrounding events, namely economical and political considerations. The third chapter will focus on Huang's landscape masterpiece "Living in Fu-chuan Mountain"(《富春山居圖》).I will attempt to evaluate this masterpiece in detail with regards to its arrangement, the use of the brush and ink,as well as the metaphorical meanings within this famous painting.Huang unquestionably influenced many painters whom came after him. This is evident in several Ming and Qing Dynasty paintings. In this fourth section of the article,I will attempt to display Huang' s influential legacy through a number of paintings which I speculate were influenced by Huang' s mastery.
