Julia Xii8teva is a well-known contemPorary French literarytheorist and critic. She has done a great contribution in the academicfields of post-struCturalism, feminism, psychoanalysis anddeconstruCtion since she became one of the leading figUres in themovemen of semiotics in the l960s.The dissedation, seding the colltemporary French /Westernmult-cultural trends as the background, stating from the angle of thesystematic and overall stlldies, adopting the aPproaches ofclose-reading texts, micro-analysis and cross-cultllre and being basedon the wide-reading of the first-hand French and English materials,gives a detailed exPounding about Kristeva's academic background,poatics' thought, multiple theories and critical standpoiflts.The dissertation is divided iflto seven chaPters. Chapter Onesummarizes Kristeva's academic background, main works andtheorical thought. ChaPter Two makes an analysis of her"sem-analysis" theory Chapter Three probes illto Kristeva's tonaltheory and iPtertextual thought, considering that such notions asdialogical principles, poetic language and intertextuality proposed byher enrich and develop the post-Structuralist tatral theory and heraPplying literature into non-literature discourse, social code andcultural studies enlarges the range of literature studies. ChaPter Fourexpounds her feminist poetics and poillts out that her specialcontribution lies in the creation of the "semiotic" discourse in2opposition to the "symbolic". Chapter Five investigates her creative thought in the field of psychoanalysis, analyzes her new interpretation of the themes such as narcissism and abjection as well as the split subject in the subconscious as to show how Kristeva redresses the theory of Freud and Lacan. Chapter Six and seven discuss Kristeva's reading of Chinese characters, Chinese culture and Chinese women, points out that her interpretation of China has a kind of romantic misreading tendency, points out her aim is to take China as the referent to criticize the western patriarchal ideology.
