As Christianity's second Great Awakening, the Gospel of Christ began large-scale expansion in the world, so,overseas missionaries came to pagan countries to broadcast the Gospel. 1840 Opium War, China's door was opened, starting a rapid influx of Western missionaries to the various open ports. Second Opium War ended with the "Treaty of Tianjin", "Beijing Treaty" signed. All the Western Christian Protestant denominations sent more missionaries, Julia Brown Mateer was one of them. Tengchow was the newly opened treaty ports. Christian missionary work had just started in the area, and the U.S. Presbyterian missionary in Tengchow was still in the pioneering stage. 1863, Julia Brown Mateer, who was sent by the North Presbyterian Church to China, in the beginning of the second year,she and her husband with other companions arrived at Tengchow, and until 1898, she died.It is 34 years that she lived and worked here.Julia Brown Mateer worked in Tengchow on the intense life of missionary and school, and she had no children, and her all the efforts were dedicated to her students. Early Tengchow, with the language barrier, she had to make clothes and medicine and other aspects of everything by herself. After a few months of the Chinese study, Julia Brown Mateer and her husband founded, "the elementary school", in the meticulous care of the couple in overcoming various difficulties, the scale of school increasing, and later renamed "Tengchow College" eventually developed into the first university in the modern sense, known as China's Harvard.At the beginning, there were no money and no textbooks. Julia Brown Mateer in person compiled teaching materials ----"Enlightened Music," "child training mantra" and so on. "Enlightened Music" was the first textbooks which prelected systemic modern music theory in modern history. At the same time she also assisted her husband Mateer in writing books, helped her sister Maggie writing mathematics materials. They cultured a batch of urgently needed modern social talents in Chinese development.Julia's husband, Dr. Mateer, during his later years recalled: the success of Tengchow College should be attributed to her. It's true. Addition to the basic teaching, she also took care of students just like a mother , meticulous, especially the first few years in school. She prepared food and clothing for students, cured their disease, corrected their behavior, and worried about other big things and small. All the overload of work and stress made her more tired. As a missionary, Julia Brown Mateer not only devoted herself to education, but also actively involved in rural road sermon, health, disaster, relief, the cause of women and so on. This article is intended to narrative the North American Presbyterian missionary Julia Brown Mateer on the intense activity in the Tengchow, and made an overall picture of the history, combing Julia Brown Mateer on the intense activities. Through these activities of the Christian Mission in China, this article would investigate the cultural exchange, the Chinese education reform , women's liberation cause, the cause of disaster relief and many other aspects of the impact. This is not the position of class analysis from the distinction between friend and foe, evidence of aggression or not, but try to learn something from religion, and the general sense of "modern" perspective, examining Julia Brown Mateer on the strong belief in the cause of their persistence and pursuit, on the care and love for Chinese students in every possible way, on her sympathy, understanding and assistance to lower Chinese people, on her concentrated interpretation and understanding for different cultures. Combined to nowdays build a harmonious society and the pursuit of a harmonious world of good, this article would judge her tenacious devotion to the Chinese life and noble character of the inherent nature of permanent significance.
