Since 1990s, urban competitiveness as a concept to describe competition relations and the development trend among cities has been widely concerned. With the increasing competition among nations, regions and cities, the improvement of competitiveness and the ability to improve the competitiveness has become one of the important targets of all levels of government. Land is an important factor affecting the urban competitiveness. At present, China is in the period of rapid urbanization, along with the rapid extension of urban land and improvement of the urban competitiveness. However, our society has entered an environmentally-friendly and resource-saving period. It is unsustainable to promote the urban competitiveness through widening urban framework. Therefore, the study of the urban land structure’s influence on urban economic competitiveness plays an important role for the promotion of urban development, rational utilization of land and improvement of the effects of macroeconomic regulation.Concerning the research of land use structure, empirical analysis of exploring the influence of urban land use structure on economic competitiveness is still rare. In light of this, by studying the influence of urban land use structure on economic competitiveness, using coupling function and exploratory spatial data analysis and panel data analysis and other research methods, the process, mechanism and effect of the influence of urban land use structure on economic competitiveness are analyzed. The main research contents and conclusions are as follows:(1) Analyzing the influence of urban land use structure on economic competitiveness from the theoretical perspective. To be specific, this paper intends to analyze the influence of urban land use structure on economic competitiveness based on land characteristic, land function, land policy and land image, as well as the quantity structure, functional partition structure and cluster structure of urban land. The results show that urban land use structure has a significant influence on economic competitiveness. Specifically, urban land use structure is crucial to economic competitiveness. In turn, economic competitiveness plays an important role in the formation process of urban land use structure. From the static point of view, influence on urban economic competition would vary from different economic contributions of land use structure. From the dynamic point of view, the conflict and game between different stakeholders keeps urban land use structure changing, which further influences urban economic competitiveness.(2) Analyzing the influence of urban land use structure in Hangzhou city on economic competitiveness. Based on the calculation of comprehensive index of urban land use structure and urban economic competitiveness, by using the time series analysis method, the interaction between urban land use structure and urban economic competitiveness and overall coordination are analyzed. Research shows that urban land use structure is the Granger cause of urban economic competitiveness and moreover, there is a long-term stable equilibrium relationship between urban land use structure and urban economic competitiveness. Urban land use structure and the urban economic competitiveness in Hangzhou city is in a state of high coupling coordination. Urban land use structure fluctuates larger than that of urban economic competitiveness. The change of land use structure in Hangzhou city, along with the improvement of the urban function and the environment, influences urban economic competitiveness.(3)Analyzing the regional differences of the influence of urban land use structure on economic competitiveness in Zhejiang province. On the basis of the calculation of coupling coordination degree, using the method of exploratory spatial data analysis, the spatial distribution characteristics of urban land use structure and urban economic competitiveness of cities in Zhejiang province are analyzed. Research shows that the overall coordination in general has no obvious spatial agglomeration and there is no local cluster center in region and spatial discrete phenomenon occurs in the edge. Spot distribution presents randomly in eastern areas and differentiation in the western areas. The difference of land use and economic development phase from city to city in Zhejiang province is the dominant factor of the regional difference of the coupling coordination degree.(4) Analyzing urban land use structure and economic competitiveness in above prefecture-level cities in China. First the present situation of our urban land use structure in 2011 is studied and the comparative analysis of urban land use structure at home and abroad is made. Then panel data of the contribution of land use structure to economic competitiveness from the year 2002 to 2011 is analyzed. Studies show that differences of urban land use structure among cities in our country is obvious. The structure of the urban land vision should be decreasing proportion of industrial land and increasing proportion of residential land and green space. Other various types of land develop in a balanced way. Land for public facilities, industrial land, land for storage, greenland, land for transportation system, land for roads and plazas of above prefecture-level cities in China from the year 2002 to 2011 have a significant positive contribution to urban economic competitiveness.(5) Finally, this paper also proposes strategies for the optimization of urban land use structure. Based on the analysis of the influence of urban land use structure on urban economic competitiveness, along with the planning principle, planning institution, ecological feminism and smart growth, a series of institution supply strategies for the optimization of urban land use structure and the promotion of urban economic competitiveness are proposed, as well as the path of urban land use structure optimization, and strategies for the coordinated development of urban land use structure and urban economic competitiveness.
