Transportation can lay the foundation for the city’s economic development and support the social undertakings, which can be regarded as basic condition for normal operation and development of the economic activities. People have long been aware of the significant impact of transportation on urban spatial development and land use, and the mechanism of transportation on the urban space has been an important issue in the fields of economics, geography, urban planning and land management. With the implementation of National Central China Rise Stratergy and the rise of Central Henan Urban Agglomeration, the accelerated development of urban construction in Zhengzhou will be maintained for a certain period of time, leading to the gathering of populations and goods in urban areas Therefore, new requirements for the construction of transportation infrastructure should be put forward to meet the rapid development of population, urbanization and economics in ZhengzhouThe perspective from and methods in regional economics were employed in this paper to illustrate the effects and impacts of transportation on urban spatial expansion theoretically, discuss the inner micro mechanism, explore the changes of the city economy, land use scale and the population size caused by the changes of transportation conditions, and summarize the general rule of urban spatial expansion by transportation. From the perspective of urban economy, land use and population size, this paper tried to explore the long-term effects of transportation on the three aspects mentioned above and measure their relationships quantitatively with the help of econometrics. By the coordination degree analysis and find out the problems between transportation and urban spatial expansion from1990to2010in Zhengzhou City, and then forecast the coordination degree between transportation and urban spatial expansion from2011to2020. Based on mentioned above, some suggestions will be put forward to promote the essence of transportation development plan return to service urban spatial extension. This paper mainly studied the theory relationship between transportation development and urban space expansion, and then analyzed the action mechanism of urban space expansion by transportation from the micro perspectives in Zhengzhou City. Meanwhile, this paper also evaluated the coordination degree between transportation development and the urban space expansion from the macro perspectives in the same city. The main conclusions are as follows.(1) This paper suggested that among the selected16indicators, the passenger transport system was especially important for the population, while the freight system for the industrial structure and economic development and the transport infrastructure system for the economic development and land use scale in Zhengzhou.(2) It was concluded that the passenger turnover quantitywas Grainger reason for the total population and urbanization, and also showed that the transportation had a positive effect on the total population and urbanization. Meanwhile, it discovered that the rate of urbanization was more easily impacted by the transportation growing with the time.(3) This paper clarified highway freight turnover quantity was Grainger reason for the proportion of first or second industry. For the proportion of second industry, the freight transport would bring negative effect in the short term. In contrast, highway freight would play a positive role in second industry during the development of cargo transportation. Meanwhile, the output of the second industry increases not only depended on the progress of science and technology, but also relied on to get rid of the low-valued production gradually in the future.(4) This paper suggested that the highway mileage was Grainger reason for the scale of urbanization, and also found that the elastic coefficient reached up to0.227077between highway mileage and urbanization. In order to maintain the co-integration relationship and long-term equilibrium between highway mileage and urbanization, the system would take a variable about0.385952bake to the state of equilibrium during the short term system of the deviation. Furthermore, it was suggested that highway mileage would bring a small positive impact on the scale of urbanization in the city of Zhengzhou in the longtime.(5) The results showed the freight turnovers (0.279960) exerted the greatest impacts on economic development, followed by the highway mileage (0.277960), transportation infrastructure investment (0.234112) and freight volume (0.156964) respectively in the city of Zhengzhou.(6) The period of urban spatial expansion could be divided into several terms. This paper suggested that the comprehensive system of urban spatial expansion was preliminary forming in Zhengzhou city from1991to1995. At the same time, it also showed that the stagnation period from1996to2000, and the rapid development in the period from2001to2010respectively. In addition, it suggested that the transportation between1990-1994was increased slowly in the stagnation perrod, and also showed that periods from1995to2005was the initial stage of transportation; Moreover, there was a stage of rapid development of the transportation in Zhengzhou since2006.(7) The coordination performance of transportation and urban spatial expansion in Zhengzhou was much better in2001and2005, besides the coordination degree were kept in the discomfort and general stage. The fluctuation of the adaptability of traffic system to urban special extension was quite noticeable, which implied the necessity to dynamically improve and optimize the traffic capacity so as to promote the general urban development.(8) The transportation and the city space expanding coordination degree prediction results showed that, the expansion of Zhengzhou city transportation and city space in the short term the coordination degree of higher, and the coordination degree gradually decline from2018to2020. This result supported a gloomy outlook that compared to the speed of urban extension; transportation infrastructure construction in Zhengzhou is relatively stagnant. The adaptability of traffic capacity to urban development would begin to deteriorate and then drags the rear. And inadaptability would appear. Reinforcement of the construction of traffic infrastructure like highway, air transportation and railway and so on is requisite for the further development of Zhengzhou City. Finally, the paper analyzed the causes of Zhengzhou city traffic and city space, the coordination of development, and points out the issues and solutions. In short, based on the proposed concept of city spatial expansion and city traffic coupling, for the first time by using the method of analysis of grey correlation analysis, co integration analysis, BP neural network and other quantitative, from the combination of macro and micro perspective, a quantitative measure of the transportation and the city space expansion of the interaction relationship and its effect.
